Tony Linck, for Life Magazine, Sign Declaring the Area as Levittown Outside Newly Constructed Homes, 1947 or 1948.

So as you know we have just bought a house in Levittown, New York. This town has a special place in American history and we thought it would be interesting to share.

Levittown was started by William Levitt in 1947. Levittown was the first truly mass-produced suburb and was used for inspiration for suburbs throughout the country. Levittown offered affordable housing to returning GIs and their families, in the form of small, detached, single-family houses.

Here are some interesting facts about Levittown-

The original house had two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen and a living room and an unfinished attic on the second floor and was sold for $6,900!!!!!!!!!

Original Floorplan for the original Levittown Cape

- The kitchen included a washing machine

-Levitt curved each street, so people would naturally have to slow down, reducing the number of stop signs.

- Levittown was original a large potato farm.

-The kitchen is to the right of the front door each had windows that looked out onto the street—so moms could watch their kids play in the front yard while they cooked dinner (back in the day it was more about the front yard and not the backyard)

-The ranch, which was part of second series of building, came with a built in TV and fireplace.

-There are very few "original" Levitts left.. Here is one-

-The houses have changed so much over the years from their original state, its crazy to think at one time they were all the same.

Here are some other fun photos from the birth of Levittown-
